Editor’s Note

Editors' note. In December 2000, there was a conference at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Study and Conference Center entitled "Feminism and the Shifting Boundaries of Public and Private." Organized by Joan W. Scott, with support from the Hans Sigrist Foundation of the University of Bern, Switzerland, the conference took a sustained second look at the categories of public and private that were so productive for earlier feminist thinking and that have been at once so mobile and yet static in ensuing years. The essays in this volume, a sampling of those presented, represent some of the participants' efforts to theorize the cleaving of the terms. A book-length edition of the proceedings of the conference is forthcoming from the University of Illinois Press.
