The Children's Literature Association is pleased to announce that Weston Woods, a leader in the field of audio visual media, will, through the auspices of ChLA, offer a $500 stipend to encourage scholarly investigation into the elements and techniques that contribute to the successful adaptation of children's literature into motion pictures, filmstrips and recordings. Also of interest are proposals relating to programming such materials for television and video. Winners, in addition to the $500 award, may also use the facilities and resources of Weston Woods to further their research without charge or limitaton. Graduate students whose research might be hampered for want of money or research opportunities are encouraged to apply.

This new award joins the annual ChLA Research Scholarships which range from $250 to $1000, the amount and number of awards based on the number and needs of the winning applicants. These scholarships are awarded for proposals dealing with criticism or original scholarship with the expectation that the undertaking will lead to publication and make a significant contribution to the field of children's literature in the areas of scholarship or criticism. The awards may be used for transportation, living expenses, materials and supplies, but not for obtaining advanced degrees, for creative writing, for textbook writing or pedagogical projects. Winners are encouraged to submit their completed papers to Children's Literature or ChLA Quarterly and should acknowledge ChLA in any publication resulting from the award.
