This essay examines early nineteenth-century children's biographies of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. It argues that these texts imagine child readers as both public and private subjects and therefore restrict discussions of rebellion in these two men's stories in order to encourage child readers' obedience to both parental and political authority structures.
