Louise Erdrich’s Birchbark House books feature strong female characters, two of whom are gender variants. Their parallel stories provide rich views of the varieties of gender expression in Native societies, yet also suggest that, even in an accepting and nurturing community, gender variants may still be misunderstood and marginalized.
