This special issue—the Bulletin's first—is based on a selection of papers presented at the workshop entitled "Cancer in the Twentieth Century," held at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, 15–17 November 2004. The meeting was sponsored by The History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM); The Wellcome Unit and Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Manchester; and the Society for the Social History of Medicine. Manchester's involvement in the workshop and this special issue were funded by a Wellcome Trust Programme Grant "Constructing Cancers, 1945–2000." The Unit and the guest editor would like to express their thanks to the Trust for this support.

This volume would have been impossible without the help of many individuals. David Cantor would like to thank Donald Lindberg, Elizabeth Fee, Paul Theerman, Ba Ba Chang, and Omar Echegoyén at the NLM, and John Pickstone and Carsten Timmermann at the Wellcome Unit.
