EL MENTIDERO DE COMEDIANTES The Editor is pleased to announce that the Canadian Association of Hispanists' annual prize for best article has been awarded to Louise Fothergill-Payne for «El caballero de Olmedo y la razón de diferencia,» which appeared in Vol. 36 of this journal, No. 1, pp. 111-124. The following announcement, concerning a new series of editions of Golden Age plays, comes from professors Joseph H. Silverman and Guido Mancini; it bears the heading «Para una Colección popular de textos teatrales del Barroco.» En colaboración con Daniele Domenichini, Luciano Garda Lorenzo , Blanca Periñán, Maria Grazia Profeti y Joseph H. Silverman, el profesor Guido Mancini está organizando una Colección popular de textos teatrales del Barroco, con el fin de hacer fácilmente asequibles obras de teatro poco o nada conocidas hoy para poder investigar, desde una perspectiva social y literaria a la vez, el fenómeno teatral de la época barroca. No se propone realizar ediciones rigurosamente críticas, sino ediciones que garantizan el texto más aceptable posible, señalando tan sólo las variantes que lo afectan marcadamente, las que se deben a los propios «autores», a la mutación de la moda o de las exigencias de la vida teatral. El tener al alcance de la mano una buena parte del riquísimo acervo teatral del Siglo de Oro —una producción de consumo que permitirá evocar los gustos y valores de los destinatarios— ofrecerá el fondo de contraste y la base amplia para un estudio sociológico del teatro de la época y para una apreciación más fecunda y circunstanciada, en su contexto literario y social, de las piezas teatrales que consideramos obras maestras. 332 332BCom, Vol. 37, No. 2 (Winter 1985) La Universidad de Pisa subvencionará la publicación de las varias ediciones que se hagan y proporcionará también un servicio de computadora para ordenar y programar los datos que vayan saliendo. As in previous years, the Symposium is offered in conjunction with the 11th annual Siglo de Oro Drama Festival (3-16 March) at El Chamizal. Professor Vem G. Williamsen chairs the committee to select papers for the Symposium. The Coordinating Committee is now made up by Sharon G. Dahlgren, Donald T. Dietz, David Gitlitz, Everett Hesse, Susan N. McCrary, José Antonio Madrigal, James A. Parr, Francisco Ruiz Ramon , Frank Smith, and Vem G. Williamsen. The Executive Committee in residence at the University of Texas at El Paso includes Armando Armengol , Richard Ford, and Arturo Pérez-Pisonero, the Symposium Director. Much as the Chamizal drama festival suggested the complementary Symposium at the UTEP, the Symposium has been instrumental in bringing into being the Association for Hispanic Classical Theatre, Inc. The board of directors of this new and welcome entity consists of Donald T. Dietz (President), David M. Gitlitz (Vice-President), Vem G. Williamsen (Secretary), Matthew D. Stroud (Treasurer), as well as Elias Bonilla, Pablo Cabrera, Sharon G. Dahlgren, Susana HemándezAraico , José A. Madrigal, and Francisco Ruiz Ramón. Allow me to quote briefly from Don Dietz's letter to me of April 18, 1985: «The pur- Mentidero333 pose of the Association is to promote live productions of Spain's Golden Age dramas and to encourage scholarly investigations of these productions . The officers and members of the Board invite not only your ideas and suggestions but we solicit your active participation. We need your help in locating and obtaining audiovisual materials—videotapes, films, recordings, records, etc. A primary goal of the Association is to establish a library of such materials for distribution to individuals interested in pursuing productions of Golden Age performances and doing research in the field.
