Abstract

In 1895, Brooks Adams forecast the imminent collapse of western civilization. By 1903 he was celebrating the incipient geopolitical primacy of the United States in world affairs. More than a fickle reflection of contemporary trends, Adams's intellectual journey was undergirded by a ceaseless search for theoretical order which was his increasingly conscious contribution to, and recapitulation of, family history.
