Abstract

Gerald L. K. Smith, born and reared in Wisconsin and educated in Indiana, served as a Christian minister before becoming Huey P. Long's Share Our Wealth Society organizer in 1934. Protestant Fundamentalism and political populism and progressivism prepared Smith for political activism. His evolution from radicalism to reaction is examined and the apparent disjunction explained.
