However, Hidden Histories of Gender and the State in Latin America provides this and many other fresh oudooks on rhe interaction of gender and state politics throughout Latin America. In addition to ptoviding innovative analysis, this anthology of twelve case studies also overcomes many of the shoitcomings often found in literature on both gendei studies and Latin Ametica. Foi instance, Latin Ametica is a large and varied region. Works rhat attempt to dissect a specific issue in Latin Ametica often have strong content about one or two countries, but are then overly general about others. The anthology format of this book gives the ieadei specific and detailed cases from nine countries and all regions of Latin America. Specificity can be a shortcoming when scholars don't give a clear view of the laigei picture, but Dote and Molyneux avoid this pitfall by placing theii own broad overviews of gender and the state in Latin Ametica at the beginning of the book. Dore takes a controversial but well-argued stance in a chapter about gender in Latin America in the 19th centuiy by saying that women's suboidination in colonial Latin America has been greatly exaggerated. In the chapter, she also contends that the state has historically done more to increase gender inequality than to improve the situation. Molyneux's introductory chapter looks at the position ofwomen in the more modern state forms of Latin America. From populism to socialism and back to neoliberalism, the chapter is very clearly broken down and is just the sorr of overview needed to tie the case studies together.
