Abstract

Here I describe four decades of my collaboration with Ernest S. "Tiger" Burch, Jr., principally concerning the editing of three late 19th-century reports on the Iñupiat of northwestern Alaska, reports which were compiled at a time when Iñupiaq societies were undergoing severe stresses from foreign intrusions and influences. The correspondence sheds light on Burch's research methodology, precision of thought, honesty, and ethical standards.
