Bart Haney, ofBlain, Kentucky, was strickeninthe tense finalseconds ofregulationplaywhen it appeared that Georgia had the victory sewed up with an 85-81 lead. But the never-say-die Wildcats sentthe game into overtime onbackto -back field goals by Dan Issel and Vernon Hatton. Hatton's bucket came on a driving lay-up as the final horn sounded. Kentucky's Jack Givens opened the scoring in the overtime period, with his patented one-hander from twelve feet out to put the Wildcats ahead, 87-85. But the Bulldogs, who had led the Wildcats throughout the second half, drew even on a tap-in by center Lee Ferguson, his eleventh field goal of the game. The score was tied three times during the overtime and as the seconds ticked away, it appeared the game might go into yet another extra period. But then Kentucky's hot-shooting guard Tony DeIk, who had made string music from three-point land throughout the game, fouled Ferguson. The big Georgia pivot man coolly sank two free throws to give his team the lead, 92-91, with six seconds remaining. After a time-out for a brief strategy session, the Wildcats brought the ball into play near the center line. Kyle Macy passed to Richie Farmer, who quickly fed theball to ChuckHayes atthelowpost. Gliding across the paint, Hayes went high to loft a gentle shot over the reaching arms of Ferguson that swished through the net as the horn sounded to end the game. The final score was Kentucky 93, Georgia 92.
