In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Down at Mack Bob's Eatery It's these damn outsiders. Pardon the language, lady but you know what I mean? They come here like they's God's angels or some holy crusaders like. Now I go to church, always have, but these uns, these... why they act like they know what's best fur everthin'. Now some a them are fine, real fine people. You know, them that come to clean up after the flood. Never seen such hard-workin' people. Real fine—plain, kind a dressin' people. But these others— my son has a name for 'em— calls 'em bleedin' heart liberals yup, he does. Fits 'em real good too. They come in here tellin' us we's all wrong. we gotta change, we's way behind. Lissen—can't they see that new shoppin' place out there? Two of 'em really— that one used to just be a ol' cow pasture—well, horses mebbe. But now we got a new road and more places to eat than you could find time to go to in a week. 'Bout put me outta business 'cept for the regulars you can count on. 65 Now I don't mind them bein' educated and all. My son—he went off and come back a lawyer— he knows how to make money alright. Right smart boy. But we don't need them others to tell us to clean up our jail and clean up our garbage and clean up our politics. They don't even know where it itches anyway. Besides we can see them things ourselves— been seein' 'em for a long time I guess and we're makin' some progress. Sure it may not be as fast as up north but what's so all-powerful great about hurryin'? We can see what needs fixin'. Some things you can't change nohow so why trouble yourselves? Sure the big guys got us over the barrel but that's just the way things is. No use foolin' about it. All this talk about taxes—ridiculous. Them big companies gotta make money too or they'll up an' leave. Then where would we be? I ask you— where would we be? You jist tell them outsiders to eat like we eats or go back where they come from. An' tell 'em they ain't gitten' any a my grits without payin' for 'em. — Evelyn Y. Miller 66 ...
