SHAW The Annual of Bernard Shaw Studies 26 (2006) 278-283

International Shaw Society

Mid-Year Newsletter for 2006

MISSION STATEMENT: The International Shaw Society, a not-for-profit organization, provides a means for those interested in the study of the life, times, and career of Bernard Shaw and his circle to coordinate their activities, exchange information and ideas, and promote an interest in Shaw worldwide. It welcomes anyone with an interest in Shaw to join (see the end of this section for an application form). To encourage the study of Shaw and the use of his works, the ISS arranges biennial or triennial conferences, annual symposia, and occasional special sessions and seminars around the world at which anyone interested in Shaw can find a gathering of kindred spirits and an occasion to speak on and discuss Shaw and to hear and see his works in performance. Because it particularly wishes to encourage the young, the ISS offers scholarships and travel grants to young people who wish to contribute to its goals.

ISS Events & Actions of 2006

  1. "SESQUICENTENNIAL SHAW" AT BROWN UNIVERSITY: To launch celebrations of Shaw's 150th birthday worldwide, the ISS co-hosted a 4-day conference with Brown U. in Providence, Rhode Island, June 8–11, which featured an exhibition of the John Hay Library's Sidney Albert Shaw Collection and dramatic readings by the Trinity Rep Theatre of famous Shaw passages. With over 50 speakers, the conference was highlighted by the keynote speech of Anthony Gibbs, plenary speeches by Martin Meisel, Ann Saddlemyer, Nicholas Grene, and Michel Pharand, and featured speeches by Stanley Weintraub and Laurence Senelick. A concluding panel on "Staging Shaw" offered a lively discussion among Amanda Dehnert of Trinity Rep and John MacDonald and Bill Largess of the Washington Stage Guild. Master of Ceremonies Don B. Wilmeth was assisted in chairing sessions by Christopher Innes, Jean Reynolds, Al Turco, Peter Gahan, MaryAnn Crawford, Leonard Conolly, John Pfeiffer, Tony Stafford, Michael O'Hara, Robert Gaines, Stuart Baker, and Norma Jenckes.
