A Grateful Farewell

With this issue, the editors for the past 20 years (1982-2002) are handing the reigns of the journal to two worthy successors, Eli Faber and Rafi Medoff. Both are scholars of distinction as well as editors of excellence, and we are confident the journal will flourish under their tutelage.

We are grateful for the members of the editorial board who have carefully read and recommended the manuscripts we have published, as well as those with special expertise outside the editorial board that we have called upon from time to time. A journal is only as good as the quality of the manuscripts it receives and the decisions its editorial board makes. In both cases, we have been unusually blessed.

We launched our tenure with a special issue devoted to revisiting a classic of American Jewish history, Moses Rischin's The Promised City, and we finish with another look at a book that has been of unusual importance to historians of American Judaism. We hope that this feature—a fresh look at a classic of the field—will endure as one of our contributions to the study of the history of the Jews and Judaism in America.

Finally, we mourn the recent passing (October 2002) of a dedicated member of the editorial board, Stanley F. Chyet. His quiet insistence on editorial perfection was a constant model for us.
