In Memoriam

Donald Emmet Worcester
1915-2003

Donald Emmet Worcester, renowned author, historian, and retired history professor, died on 21 September at a Fort Worth hospital.

Dr. Worcester served as chairman of Texas Christian University's history department from 1963 to 1972 and initiated the doctoral program in history. He continued to teach as an emeritus professor and then as an adjunct professor until 1997. He taught at the University of Florida from 1947 to 1963 and served a term as chairman of the history department.

Dr. Worcester's early career focus was Latin American history, but he devoted the last three decades to the American Southwest. He was a prolific writer who produced numerous articles, historical books, textbooks, three Western novels, and eight children's books. His book The Apaches: Eagles of the Southwest won the Southwest Book Award and the Western Writers of America Golden Spur Award. His book on the Spanish Mustang won the C. L. Sonnichsen Award in 1985. He won three Golden Spurs in three categories and in 1988 received the Western Writers Golden Saddleman Award, given for a lifetime of contribution to the West.
