Guest editorial We believe that our faithful subscribers will want to know that, on the basis of preliminary results, it is now believed that the Annals will produce an operating profit for the first time in years. As of February 28, 1982, the adjusted fund balance of the Annals was $27,000 in deficit. Based on modest assumptions regarding ability to contain and reduce costs, we now estimate that by the end of the 1983 publication year, the Annals should have moved from an overall deficit position to an overall positive fund balance position. A number of subscribers have chosen to let their subscriptions lapse. While this is understandable and was anticipated in our planning estimates, the long-run viability of the Annals will depend on true growth in subscriptions and other income, not rate increases. We hope that all our subscribers will continue to be supportive of the publication. With moderate rates of growth, it should be possible to forestall further price increases for some time in the future. In addition, we appreciate the support of advertisers. In the past year or so there has been a significant increase in advertising revenue due to the willingness of advertisers to pay increased charges. We hope you will also be supportive of our advertisers, as appropriate to your needs. Hubert D. Summers Executive Director ANNOUNCEMENT The CAID Executive Committee has established a Mini-Grant program intended to promote the sharing of ideas and innovations developed by teachers of the hearing impaired. The two types of grants—awarded either to an individual classroom teacher (who must be a CAID member) or to a group of teachers in a single school/program (one of whom must be a CAID member)—are given to assist in the research, planning, development, or dissemination of a classroom or grade level project. Narrative proposals are required. The proposals will then be reviewed by a special committee which will base its decisions on specific guidelines. Complete details on the requirements for the proposals as well as the guidelines used by the special committee will be published in the June CAID Newsletter.
