Abstract

College catalogs of 33 programs offering undergraduate degrees in deaf education were investigated. Results indicated that deaf education majors have few opportunities to take elective courses due to liberal arts curriculum requirements, major requirements and other requirements necessary for receiving state certification as a teacher of the deaf. Required courses ranged from 90 to 154 semester hours, with an average of 122.82. The number of semester hours required by the college or university for the degree ranged from 120 to 130, with an average of 125. No statistically significant differences were found in the number of semester hours required of deaf education majors in programs with Council on Education of the Deaf (CED) approval and those without.
