The outcome of a pilot program to provide genetic counseling to parents and students in a school for the deaf is reported. The etiologies of deafness for the 26 children whose families expressed interest in the study were defined and genetic counseling provided. By simple methods, the causes of severe hearing impairment for half of the children were proposed. A genetic counselor's potential role in the counseling and education of students, parents, and staff in schools for the deaf is suggested.
