Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe a set of independent listening activities using standard audiovisual equipment that were implemented in two speech classes with a total of 14 severely and profoundly deaf students ages 14-16. Discrimination, recognition, and comprehension tasks formed the basis of auditory activities that were used. Examples of tasks under each category are given as well as required equipment and samples of materials. The rationale for the need to devise independent activities using audiovisual equipment and individualized group speech instruction is explored. The characteristics of the equipment are analyzed in terms of suitability and adaptability to the hearing-impaired population.
