This piece emerged from the confluence of two concepts: the style of aerial embroidery and the phrase “liquid map” from Michelle Burnham’s Transoceanic America. Inspired by the image of rice paddies featured on the original CFP, I wanted to interpolate that patchwork of land into a larger “map” of the Pacific region, centering the vast oceanic continent that bridges Asia and the Americas together. Following in the Pasifika narrative tradition of cyclical and spiraling time, the “map” is then unbound from its classical projection, allowing the threads of the ocean to churn endlessly while the land flows fluidly in between.
