Front Cover: Malaysian musician Fauziah Suhaili posted this confident photo on social media in response to some sexist commentary expressing incredulity that a woman could play the gambus (Arab lute), essentially telling her detractors to get used to her being around. Throughout her career, Fauziah has found creative ways to circumvent the gendered assumptions involved in playing a musical instrument strongly associated with masculine identity. As a young musician, she dressed as a boy to enter a gambus competition in her hometown. During the global pandemic in 2020–21, she experimented with “virtual busking” and other remote collaboration opportunities to sustain her career and sidestep many of the social pressures that framed her as a token novelty. This photo was taken by Fauziah’s brother, Mohd Saiful Azwan Suhaili, in June of 2020, capturing a time when creative performers, like so many others, were struggling to maintain their health, relationships, and professional lives.
