The title of this image is “Compagnia della Nativita detta de Facchini.” Casacce were brotherhoods based largely in Genoa. The name “Cassaccia” likely derives either from the brotherhoods themselves, or from the houses—case—where they gathered. The brotherhoods existed as far back as Roman times, and they engaged in elaborate processions such as the one seen here.
