Front Cover: The cover image is an engraving by the Flemish artist and publisher Theodor de Bry (1528–98) from the Brevis Narratio eorum quae in Florida Americai provincia Gallis acciderunt (Frankfurt, 1591). This image is one of a series of forty-eight illustrations executed by de Bry for that text, but these printed illustrations were probably based on originals painted by Jacques le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533–88), an artist who accompanied the French expedition of Jean Ribault and René Laudonnière during their unsuccessful attempt in 1564–65 to establish a Huguenot colony at Fort Caroline amongst the Timucuan people who inhabited the coastal region in North Florida near the estuary of the St. Johns River. The title of this image (plate xxxix) is “Chief Satouriona and his wife go for a walk.” Le Moyne brought his images of the Timucuans back to Europe when he and about twenty-five other colonists returned to France after narrowly escaping the attack and massacre of the French settlers at Fort Caroline by Spanish forces from St. Augustine led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés.
