Front Cover: The front cover of this year’s Journal features the high school graduation photo of Leslie Satoru Nakashima. Born on Kaua‘i, he graduated from President William McKinley High School on O‘ahu in 1919 and went on to become an accomplished journalist, writing for newspapers in Hawai‘i and Japan. During World War II Nakashima was in Japan when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. He was the first on scene news reporter to chronicle the aftermath of the bomb’s horrific devastation.

In recognition of Leslie Satoru Nakashima’s alma mater, the cover colors of this year’s Journal are black and gold, the school colors of McKinley High School.

Back Cover: The back cover shows the statue of Kamehameha III in Thomas Square that was dedicated on July 31, 2018. Although a similar photo of the 12-foot bronze statue is on the back cover of HJH 2018, this particular photo was taken at sunrise on the morning of December 21, 2018, the winter solstice. It shows that the unique design of the plaza surrounding the statue, including the flagpole, is also a solar compass that connects the king to the Hawaiian flag.
