Front Cover: The front cover of this year’s Journal features Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli, as ayoung king of Hawai‘i. Robert Dampier painted the portrait in 1825, an oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 19 5/8 inches (59.1 x 49.8 cm). Dampier was the expedition artist on the ship HMS Blonde, under the command of Captain George Byron. The HMS Blonde sailed to Hawai‘i to return the bodies of Kamehameha II, Liholiho, and Queen Kamāmalu, who had both died during a visit to England. Back Cover: The back cover shows the statue of Kamehameha III in Thomas Square that was dedicated this year on July 31. The date marked the 175th anniversary of Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, or Sovereignty Restoration Day, which was July 31, 1843. The $250,000 12-foot bronze statue, created by portrait sculptor Thomas Jay Warren, was presented by Mayor Kirk Caldwell, City and County of Honolulu, and the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts.
