Front Cover: During his initial expedition to the Arctic in 1818, Sir John Ross (1777–1856) collected a sled from the Inughuit on their first meeting. The sled was constructed of a combination of whale bone, walrus bone and ivory, and driftwood, and it remains in the British Museum collections today. This digitization is based on sketch was made by Hans Zakæus (d. 1819), who was a West Greenlander brought by Ross to serve both as an illustrator and interpreter on the expedition. It was published in John Ross’s (1819) A Voyage of Discovery, Made Under the Orders of the Admiralty, in His Majesty’s Ships Isabella and Alexander, for the Purpose of Exploring Baffin’s Bay, and Inquiring into the Probability of a North-West Passage (London: J. Murray).
