Mary, in a singular bodily manner, is the new Eve—the new mother of all the living— for she will give birth to the Son of God incarnate from whom all her believing and obedient children will obtain eternal life. Moreover, while Mary perfectly exemplifies the obedience of faith, she also illustrates the proper use of reason in conformity with faith. The whole of Mary’s life, from beginning to end, was marked by her rational Spirit-filled pondering. “Mary kept all of these things, pondering them in her heart” (Lk 2:19). It is interesting that the door closes on Jesus’s hidden life with these words: “And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart” (Lk 2:51). Jesus’s hidden life was a life of obedience. Mary’s hidden life was a life of pondering. Her final words to us are quite simple. “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5).
