I wrote "The Sandwich Artist" when I was feeling disillusioned with my writing career. I had some initial successes publishing stories in literary magazines, but was going through an onslaught of rejections that made me question my abilities as a writer, as well as my pursuit of the art form of fiction. Literary magazine readerships, as we all know, are small, and even when I managed to publish work in them, I questioned the impact my words were making in the world. Meanwhile, at my day job, I was writing soul-crushing B2B software content, employing jargon like "leverage," "agile," and, of course, the dreaded "synergy." This only exacerbated my disillusionment. A prayer is a way of expressing devotion, yes, but it can also be the medium through which we investigate our obsessions. "Dear Father," was born due to my all-consuming interest in religion, desire, and girlhood. When I first approached this poem, I was spending a week in Lake Tahoe surrounded by a community of poets who were following a simple rule: write a poem a day, turn it in before midnight, and workshop it the next morning. "Ground-up Glass" is an excerpt from my opiate recovery memoir, a work-in-progress tentatively titled The Radioactive Patient: Suboxone, Pain and Rock 'N Roll.
