In 1969, he moved to Seattle after several years in Washington, D.C. My husband, Fred, invited his old California acquaintances, Pete and his wife, Teri, and their six children for dinner—and the children and parents of the Jameros and Cordovas, who all became our friends for life. We introduced the family to the Filipino Youth Activities of Seattle. All the Jamero kids joined the Drill Team. As I looked through Settling St. Malo, a collection of poetry on the history of Filipinos in Louisiana, in preparation for my reading at the FANHS Conference in Houston, I skimmed past the tabbed pages that marked the poems I featured at readings for general audiences. With a FANHS audience, I could assume familiarity with St. Malo and Manila Village. I could skip explanations about Filipinos living in Louisiana for centuries. Marina Espina introduced us to this history in her groundbreaking work Filipinos in Louisiana. Writing functions as both a personal and cultural bridge, allowing Filipino American authors to reclaim and reimagine connections to heritage that have often been fragmented by diaspora, colonial history, and generational silence. Storytelling is not merely a creative act but a method of cultural survival and self-definition to these panelists whose work as writers was deeply entwined in their Filipino heritage.
