When the First World War broke out Russell largely abandoned serious philosophical work in order to devote his time to opposing the war. But by the fall of 1917, when further opposition seemed unlikely to make even the slightest change in the course of events, Russell found his interest in philosophy reviving.1 He had, moreover, a serious need to make money. Since being dismissed from his lectureship at Cambridge in 1916 he had been living largely off capital which was now seriously depleted. According to Plato, knowledge is (fully) justified true belief. Plato's famous Theaetetus definition can be put schematically as follows:

Russell has recently been described on the bbc as "The First Media Academic",1 in a broadcast pointing to his use of audio-visual means to advance his ideas, especially concerning political issues. Indeed, the catalogue of Russell's use of media is impressive—including radio talks, debates, panel discussions and interviews on the bbc, as well as on us and other networks. Some as yet uncatalogued papers donated to the Russell Archives by Constance Malleson ("Colette") scholar John Wilson Foster include a pocket-size (108 × 145 mm.) brochure for the Hotel Reisen, Stockholm, dated 1937. Colette stayed there briefly after leaving Finland for neutral Sweden in June 1941, when the Finns aligned with Nazi Germany. Seven years later she booked herself and Russell into the same historic hotel for his trip to Sweden, where he lectured at the universities of Stockholm and Uppsala and addressed the Swedish Parliament. The previous general update of acquisitions appeared in Russell, n.s. 43, no. 2 (winter 2023): 178–80. The new listing covers items numbered 1,872 to 1,900, with the latest items arriving in September 2025. rec. acq. 1,883, a large purchase (c.2000 items) of mainly Allen & Unwin and Alys Russell correspondence (see this journal's winter 2024 Editors' Notes), is still being processed. Many of these items are originals to replace copies already described in bracers. Details of the new material will be supplied in a future update. Christoph Schuringa's excellently written book fills a significant gap in the historical literature. While it is not quite a "social history" that traces the influence of social groups on individuals, it nonetheless offers a thorough and illuminating overview of analytic philosophy. Schuringa emphasizes that philosophers are real individuals who confront genuine social, political, and ethical challenges. In tracing "how politics has shaped" analytic philosophy, his approach departs sharply from most existing macro-histories of the field—such as those by Michael Dummett, Scott Soames, and Stephen P. It's some 60 years since Bertrand Russell inaugurated what became known as the Vietnam International War Crimes Tribunal. Russell made his final visit to London in November 1966 in order to do so. He had an intense schedule of meetings during several days in the capital, including a press conference which launched the Tribunal before assembled journalists. Some among the press were already rather hostile to the project. Discontent increased somewhat when Russell didn't take questions after reading a prepared statement about the Tribunal.
