Cancer significantly disrupts family systems, often leading to psychological distress among caregivers, partners, and children. Storytelling, a universal human practice, has shown therapeutic potential in health care by facilitating emotional expression, meaning-making, and interpersonal connection. This study explores the development of a storytelling intervention to support families affected by cancer, using the Delphi method to establish consensus among key stakeholders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses experienced unsustainable workloads within practice settings that were often psychologically traumatizing and devoid of relief. Stress caused by an emergent and worsening public health emergency was not exclusive to their professional lives. The pandemic complicated and burdened their personal lives as well (American Nurses Foundation, 2023). This experiment in storytelling emerged from the minds of four scholars who attended the Feminisms and Rhetorics (FemRhet) conference held at Spelman College in October 2023. At FemRhet, they heard stories wordsmithed in the traditions of creative nonfiction, stories that broke silence and spoke truth to power in feminist ways, and stories unhinged from any particular disciplinary context—at least not one known by these four listeners. Stories are told and retold across geographical and cultural boundaries, and the same story can take on different purposes or meanings. These phenomena have been explained in naturalistic ways, focusing on storytellers and listeners. Stories move around the world by retelling, or perhaps some of them are made up again and again because of commonalities in the human psyche. Sometimes the same things happen to people in different places, and become stories. These are human-centered explanations.
