Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming, but whose name among Indigenous peoples has included: Arapahoe, “Bear’s Tipi”; Cheyenne, “Bear’s Lodge,” “Bear’s Tipi,” “Bear Peak,” and “Bear’s House”; Crow, “Bear Lodge”; Kiowa, “Tree Rock” and “Aloft on a Rock”; Lakota, “Bear Lodge,” “Bear Lodge Butte,” “Grizzly Bear’s Lodge,” “Ghost Mountain,” “Grey Horn Butte,” and “Mythic-Owl Mountain.” Devils Tower was the first national monument designated by President Theodore Roosevelt in September of 1906 under the Antiquities Act of the same year. Volume 14 of Preservation Education & Research is a special issue focusing on cultural property protection (CPP), a systematic approach to protecting cultural monuments during armed conflicts and response after natural disasters. The articles in this issue were developed from several papers featured in an Ithaca, New York conference in February 2022. Michael A. Tomlan and Melissa M. Smith organized the Ithaca conference and edited the articles featured in this issue of PER. The aftermath of the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War, along with the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian War, which interestingly began during the conference, have compelled American historic preservationists to examine CPP as a concept in greater detail.

this number of Preservation Education & Research is different from the previous volumes because it begins with a thematic overview that transcends several disciplines not often placed in juxta-position. It fills a gap in the conceptual framework of many of these fields, as a consequence of the unique contributors involved, but also as a necessary response to the growing need for partnerships between diverse practitioners in the effort to protect cultural property affected by human conflict and unrest, including military occupation and on military lands, as well as those affected by natural disasters that are becoming all too prevalent in a world increasingly affected by climate change.Historic preservation has long

today, I would like to share some thoughts regarding the Cultural Property Protection Program in the Department of Defense. Cultural property protection efforts should include education, information, training, and appreciation for other cultures. many tribal nations indigenous to the United States have had a difficult path ensuring their cultural property is protected. Tribal nations that were removed from their ancestral lands and relocated in the nineteenth century face an additional burden. Cultural property protection (CPP) practitioners generally agree that rapid response is the most important factor for protecting cultural properties that have been damaged by kinetic military action, internal political actions, extreme weather events, or earthquakes. This paper builds on three overall challenges in cultural heritage protection: namely, complexity, interfaces, and education and training. It focuses on the need for cooperation and building interfaces between heritage specialists and the military for two reasons: it was prepared for the Training in Cultural Property Protection: A Host Nation Perspective conference and in each of the training exercises described in detail below the sparring partner was the military. Gentrification is ubiquitous, yet most people cannot agree upon a singular definition or its origins. In The Misunderstood History of Gentrification, Gale tackles the definition and has added to the body of knowledge by providing early twentieth-century case study examples of what we now understand as gentrification. The author dispels the notion that gentrification has been a new and recent phenomenon affecting cities since the 1960s or 1970s, as may be commonly thought.
