    Bonampak est une petite cit&amp;#xE9; maya au Mexique, enfouie pendant des si&amp;#xE8;cles sous la jungle, &amp;#xE0; quelques kilom&amp;#xE8;tres de Yaxchilan, important centre &amp;#xE9;conomique et culturel entre les VII&amp;#x1D49; et X&amp;#x1D49; si&amp;#xE8;cles. Bonampak intrigue l&amp;#x2019;auteure parce que ce site &amp;#x201C;enchanteur,&amp;#x201D; &amp;#x201C;incontournable&amp;#x201D; selon les affiches touristiques, renferme les seules fresques conserv&amp;#xE9;es de l&amp;#x2019;&amp;#xE9;poque classique.     The French Resistance in Haute-Savoie is significant for the role its inhabitants played during World War II, and for the memory of the Resistance fighters who chose to bear witness to an indelible experience. These testimonies contributed to the reconstruction of a post-war regional identity. By refusing German occupation and defeat at all costs, and by fighting the Nazi invaders, the dynamism of this civil resistance is evident. Although a minority, the Haut-Savoyards succeeded in stopping the occupation of their region in its tracks.     Ce roman autobiographique est l&amp;#x2019;arbre qui d&amp;#xE9;voile la for&amp;#xEA;t. Celle du Passet, dont l&amp;#x2019;auteur est le gestionnaire, dont les semis furent plant&amp;#xE9;s par un grand-p&amp;#xE8;re qui voyait le monde comme une succession de g&amp;#xE9;n&amp;#xE9;rations et qui cr&amp;#xE9;a de toutes pi&amp;#xE8;ces une for&amp;#xEA;t dont seule sa filiation b&amp;#xE9;n&amp;#xE9;ficierait.     Buttoud&amp;#x2019;s work on Franco-Algerian relations is a refreshing look into a little-studied aspect of the Napoleonic era. The first two chapters present historical background extending as far back as the seventeenth century. Chapters three and four delve into Franco-Algerian relations during Napoleon&amp;#x2019;s reign, focusing on two crises in particular: those of 1802 and 1808. The final chapter and the epilogue provide a broader interpretation of the events covered in the preceding chapters. The common thread running through the four narrative chapters is the fragile peace and, at times, alliance between France and Algeria.     Before the opening credits roll on Julie Delpy&amp;#x2019;s recent film, we learn that the fictional inhabitants of the rural village of Paimpont, Brittany, have pre- pared dutifully to welcome war refugees only to learn that officials &amp;#x201C;ran out of Ukrainians&amp;#x201D; and have instead sent a Syrian family. Given this set-up, the film&amp;#x2019;s  title Les Barbares&amp;#x2014;presented over an image of Th&amp;#xE9;odore Chass&amp;#xE9;riau&amp;#x2019;s neoclassical painting Sc&amp;#xE8;ne de bataille, guerrier gaulois au cheval&amp;#x2014;feels either blatantly facetious or humorously cringe-worthy. La narration donne un peu l&amp;#x2019;impression de vannes qu&amp;#x2019;on aurait ouvertes et qu&amp;#x2019;on ne peut en aucun cas refermer: tout en sort, de la plus grande id&amp;#xE9;e au d&amp;#xE9;tail le plus minime. Les phrases compl&amp;#xE8;tes sont entrecoup&amp;#xE9;es de morceaux de phrases qui fonctionnent comme des ajouts &amp;#xE0; la pens&amp;#xE9;e premi&amp;#xE8;re. Inspired by Michael Moore, it was a funny, acerbic, and timely interventionist documentary confronting billionaire employers (in this case, LVMH and Bernard Arnault, then the richest man in the world) with the victims of their labor policies. Une photo de Slimani &amp;#xE0; l&amp;#x2019;&amp;#xE2;ge de 18 ans en 1999 se trouve sur le bandeau du livre: &amp;#x201C;C&amp;#x2019;est une photo de moi qui regarde Paris depuis le Sacr&amp;#xE9;-C&amp;#x153;ur.     Trois intertextes s&amp;#x2019;imposent lorsque se cl&amp;#xF4;t cet ambitieux premier film d&amp;#x2019;un jeune r&amp;#xE9;alisateur issu de la diaspora sri-lankaise. Le fameux &amp;#x201C;Pauvre Gaspard&amp;#x201D; du  Trou de Jacques Becker (1960), d&amp;#x2019;abord. En effet, comme Gaspard, Michael (magnifiquement interpr&amp;#xE9;t&amp;#xE9; par Lawrence Valin) a trahi les siens et suscite ainsi notre piti&amp;#xE9;. Ensuite, la fin de We Own the Night (James Gray, 2007) qui s&amp;#x2019;ach&amp;#xE8;ve aussi sur une remise de m&amp;#xE9;daille tragique (mont&amp;#xE9;e presque &amp;#xE0; l&amp;#x2019;identique) o&amp;#xF9; l&amp;#x2019;adoubement public du h&amp;#xE9;ros ne saurait faire oublier toute la douleur que cet honneur lui a co&amp;#xFB;t&amp;#xE9;.     In her conclusion, the author uses the expression &amp;#x201C;the blurring of conceptual boundaries&amp;#x201D; (202). This idea could be applied to the novels of the three authors studied and to Vredenburgh&amp;#x2019;s own analysis of them. She begins her study with a history of the concept of the &amp;#x201C;fantastic&amp;#x201D; in French literature, showing it to be an evolving, continuously redefined literary term. In general, the fantastic signifies the eruption of the strange or supernatural into &amp;#x201C;normal&amp;#x201D; human life. This occurrence is greeted with fear or doubt on the part of the characters in the story and questioning by the narrator.
