Three hundred years ago, Europeans made violent contact with Rapa Nui. If the matamu‘a, or “precontact” Rapanui who witnessed that unhappy encounter could speak to their descendants today, would they mourn what has been lost? The Mana Tupuna Project identifies clear signs of self-determination and decolonization at work among contemporary artists, educators, and scholars. Beginning in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic arrested all international travel and tourism to Rapa Nui. Faced with loss of revenue and severe economic hardship, the population has nonetheless proved resilient and indomitable as ever. In December 1946, the so-called “Easter Island Commission” a varied group of professionals, traveled to Rapa Nui with the mission of carrying out a study of the island and its inhabitants. The harsh reality in which they found themselves impacted and motivated them to inform continental Chile about the living conditions of the Rapanui, and in turn, organize a network of help for them. As a result of this trip, the Sociedad de Amigos de la Isla de Pascua (SADIP)1 was created. The 1950s marked a turning point in the popularization of trans-Pacific contact theories following Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition. An earlier publication prior to this voyage, and those afterwards, posited that two pre-Columbian migration waves from the Americas, one from North America and one from South America, had resulted in the initial settlement of Polynesia, contributing important elements to its culture (Heyerdahl 1941:15–26). Early twentieth century Rapa Nui (Easter Island) was a turbulent place that was transitioning into the modern world. It received few outside visitors and their documentation is often scattered in various collections. Recently, a new set of images was digitized by the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in Berlin, which contains a number of previously unknown images of Rapa Nui during these times. The authorship is remarkably attributed to German ethnologist Walter Lehmann (1878–1939), who never actually visited the island. Since 2003, Terevaka Archaeological Outreach (TAO) has offered unforgettable experiential education opportunities for Rapa Nui youth regarding archaeology, traditional lifeways, technology, and sustainable development. Like many industries, education has taken a hard hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, and international fieldwork on Rapa Nui has become nearly impossible for the time being, with the closure of the island’s airport to visitors.However, TAO managed to continue with its mission in 2020, with a project that culminated in the launch of an unprecedented digital repatriation campaign through the internet and social media. Much has transpired since the publication of Volume 32 of the Rapa Nui Journal in late 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, regular commercial flights to and from Rapa Nui were suspended for over two years. The island reopened to visitors in August 2022. In the meantime, life on the island was quiet, with islanders existing as they did in the days before tourism became the main economic focus.
