    En 1955, Pierre Bourdieu, alors jeune agr&amp;#xE9;g&amp;#xE9; de philosophie, est &amp;#xAB; appel&amp;#xE9; &amp;#xBB; en Alg&amp;#xE9;rie. Apr&amp;#xE8;s son service militaire, il int&amp;#xE8;gre la facult&amp;#xE9; d&amp;#39;Alger en qualit&amp;#xE9; d&amp;#39;assistant jusqu&amp;#39;en 1961, il en revient avec un gout prononc&amp;#xE9; pour la sociologie ainsi que les n&amp;#xE9;gatifs de 3000 photographies. Longtemps rest&amp;#xE9;es &amp;#xE0; la marge de son &amp;#x153;uvre, ces images, apr&amp;#xE8;s un d&amp;#xE9;tour par l&amp;#39;Autriche, ont &amp;#xE9;t&amp;#xE9; acquises en 2023 par le Mus&amp;#xE9;e national d&amp;#39;Art moderne (MNAM).     Le travail que je propose ici s&amp;#39;inscrit dans la perspective d&amp;#39;ouvrir d&amp;#39;autres chemins possibles de compr&amp;#xE9;hension des processus d&amp;#39;expropriation des terres et de d&amp;#xE9;sint&amp;#xE9;gration des communaut&amp;#xE9;s rurales alg&amp;#xE9;riennes par le syst&amp;#xE8;me colonial fran&amp;#xE7;ais aux XIXe et XXe si&amp;#xE8;cles.   <title>Coup d'État 1965, A Visual Investigation (or, thinking with images)</title>

    In the fall of 2022, I curated an exhibition of the work of late Algerian photographer Mohamed Kouaci1 at Brown and Columbia universities to coincide with 60 years of Algerian independence since 1962. I called the exhibition Mohamed Kouaci: Vision(s) of Algeria (Figs. 1, 2, 6, 7, 8). Through close to 150 photographs, including original prints provided by Safia Kouaci, Kouaci&amp;#39;s widow and a National Liberation Front militant in her own right, my intention was to share Kouaci&amp;#39;s work with a new audience, but also complicate our understanding of his production during the Algerian Revolution. To this end, I experimented with less linear and didactic ways to approach his work.

    Where is &amp;#x22;the people&amp;#x22;? Who is the &amp;#x22;demos&amp;#x22; at stake within these histories of interruption we call liberation movements? It is common to use the word &amp;#x22;people&amp;#x22; to refer both to the collectives liberating themselves from oppression and to those represented by the institutions of &amp;#x22;liberal democracies&amp;#x22;. But are these two sorts of collectives reducible to the same concept of demos? To answer these questions, I will venture into a few hypotheses which will guide me through the lines that follow: Halaqa can be heuristically seen as a name for what we are used to calling &amp;#x22;radical democracy&amp;#x22;: practices of self-presentation through which the people act below or against the logic of representation implemented by the state.     In the current French context to say secularism is to immediately think of la&amp;#xEF;cit&amp;#xE9;, a law issued on December 9, 1905, and introduced to the constitution as a principle of the Republic in 1946 to ensure equality among citizens (as state ideology claims). However, colonial Algeria, with its racial and religious dynamics centered on Islam, turned the question of la&amp;#xEF;cit&amp;#xE9; mainly into a problem of Islam&amp;#x2013;a problem that has continued and, in fact, has been exacerbated since independence, both in postcolonial Algeria and in postcolonial France.To say la&amp;#xEF;cit&amp;#xE9; in France today is to immediately think of Islam, of French Muslims, of Muslim migrants, of the tragedy of Charlie Hebdo, of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad&amp;#x2013;in

    Cette uchronie est une fiction &amp;#xE9;crite dans le reflux de la m&amp;#xE9;moire r&amp;#xE9;veill&amp;#xE9;e par les f&amp;#xEA;tes bruyantes du 60&amp;#xE8;me anniversaire du d&amp;#xE9;clenchement de la guerre d&amp;#39;ind&amp;#xE9;pendance alg&amp;#xE9;rienne. Une uchronie qui plus pr&amp;#xE9;cis&amp;#xE9;ment part de faits historiques et v&amp;#xE9;cus, comme l&amp;#39;assassinat de mon p&amp;#xE8;re en pleine guerre de lib&amp;#xE9;ration, comme les d&amp;#xE9;jeuners &amp;#xE0; la ferme en juillet 1962, ce premier &amp;#xE9;t&amp;#xE9; de l&amp;#39;ind&amp;#xE9;pendance. Autour de grandes tables nous accueillions la famille, les amis et les amis des amis exil&amp;#xE9;s qui rentraient au pays, venant de Tunisie.     The violent decolonization of Algeria resulted, among many other consequences, in the departure of nearly the entire European and Jewish population at the moment of independence. For Algeria, this entailed the sudden absence of the very expertise necessary to build a new nation, a problem Frantz Fanon predicted in Les Damn&amp;#xE9;s de la terre (1961) when he observed that newly decolonized nations were &amp;#x22;an underdeveloped world&amp;#x22;, &amp;#x22;a world without doctors, without engineers, and without administrators&amp;#x22; (1963: 95). This withdrawal of expertise was not accidental, as Fanon insisted: &amp;#x22;you may see colonialism withdrawing its capital and its technicians and setting up around the young State the apparatus of economic pressure.

  <title>Le Studio Rex: Reframing the Photographs of Immigrant Workers in Marseille (1960–1985)</title>

    Between November 2024 and March 2025, the exhibition Ne m&amp;#39;oublie pas in Marseille presented a collection of photographs taken by Assadour Keussayan, who opened Studio Rex in 1933 after leaving Turkey. The studio became a family enterprise, and with his wife and their children, Keussayan produced thousands of photographs of its clients until its closure in the 2000s. Curator and photography collector Jean-Marie Donat subsequently compiled the studio&amp;#39;s archives, which contain thousands of images, often forgotten or left behind by their sitters, since many were only passing through Marseille.
