Tomado prisionero despu&amp;#xE9;s de una batalla, frente al poeta y como &amp;#x201C;ejemplar castigo / de los rebeldes pueblos&amp;#x201D; (XXII, 45), sus dos manos le son amputadas. El desd&amp;#xE9;n con el que enfrenta su mutilaci&amp;#xF3;n, las palabras que dirige a los espa&amp;#xF1;oles que la contemplan y ejecutan, su valor y &amp;#x201C;furia arrebatada&amp;#x201D; (XXII, 50) lo hacen merecedor de un nombre al interior del poema.     &amp;#x201C;Porque los fil&amp;#xF3;sofos no menos atribuyen vida a las plantas que a los animales, porque tienen alma con que se vegetan i cr&amp;#xED;an&amp;#x201D; comments Fernando de Herrera when describing the &amp;#x201C;haze morir la ierba&amp;#x201D; in his Anotaciones to Garcilaso de la Vega&amp;#x2019;s Third Eclogue (988). Herrera&amp;#x2019;s comments ascribe to Garcilaso&amp;#x2019;s work a reflection on the soul-bearing condition of non-human beings, illuminating the ancient philosophy circulating in the sixteenth century. He alludes to the Aristotelian notion of the soul that unites different life forms: vegetative, animal, and human.1 In the same passage, he suggests that all three bear souls and are analogous because they share one process of dying, separating their souls from their bodies:
