  <title>A formal analysis of the Chinese excessive resultative construction</title>
  <link>https://muse.jhu.edu/article/972468</link>
  <description>
    &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
    In Mandarin Chinese, there is a special type of resultative constructions in the form of &amp;#x201C;theme+V+A-le&amp;#x201D;. Lu (1990) pointed out that this construction is ambiguous in that it can have either an excessive resultative reading or an ordinary resultative reading,1 as shown in the contrast between (1a) and (1b).2(1)
In (1a), the clause d&amp;#xF2;ng w&amp;#x101; sh&amp;#x113;n le has a &amp;#x2018;more than expected&amp;#x2019; excessive resultative reading. The meaning of (1a) is &amp;#x2018;the hole was dug deeper than what is expected to plant a tree in it&amp;#x2019;. In (1b), the clause d&amp;#xF2;ng w&amp;#x101; sh&amp;#x113;n le has an ordinary resultative reading. However, if we change the adjective sh&amp;#x113;n &amp;#x2018;deep&amp;#x2019; into its antonym qi&amp;#x1CE;n &amp;#x2018;shallow&amp;#x2019;, the ambiguity will disappear, and the clause will only have the

  <title>The interaction between evidentiality, epistemic modality, and mood: The hẽ interrogative in Chaoyang Southern Min</title>
  <link>https://muse.jhu.edu/article/972469</link>
  <description>
    &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
    Evidentiality, the linguistic category indicating the source of information, has been extensively studied since the edited work of Chafe and Nichols (1986). However, a contentious issue in this field has persistently been under debate: Specifically, the relationship between evidentiality and epistemic modality &amp;#x2013; the latter being the category representing the speaker&amp;#x2019;s degree of certainty. While the two are widely recognized as closely associated categories, the fundamental question remains: are they distinct from each other (as argued by De Haan 1999; Aikhenvald 2004, etc.), or partially overlapping (as claimed by van der Auwera and Plungian 1998, etc.), or do they share an inclusive relationship (as asserted by

  <link>https://muse.jhu.edu/article/972470</link>
  <description>
    &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
    Tangut language (also known as Xixia language) is an extinct Tibeto-Burman language once spoken by the Tangut, an extinct ethnic group resided in the Xixia Empire (1038&amp;#x2013;1227) in northwestern China. Most genealogical studies reveal that it is most closely related to the Qiangic branch, due to share some important cognates and grammatical features. (Matisoff 2004; Sun 2016; Gong 2017) Some scholars also proposed alternative hypotheses, such as Jacques (2014). He contended that Tangut share a closer affinity with rGyalrong and Pumi languages and placed Tangut within Tangutic (tangoutique) subgroup.Since the mid-1970s, when Russian scholar Kepping (1975, 1976, 1982b, 1994) first proposed the existence of the verbal

  <title>Redefining clause in Chinese: A systemic functional approach</title>
  <link>https://muse.jhu.edu/article/972471</link>
  <description>
    &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
    Though recognised as the basic or the pivotal unit in Chinese grammar (e.g., L&amp;#xFC; 1979: 39; Xing 1995, 2017), the clause has not been adequately defined in the literature, partly because this term is so basic and commonly used that it is taken for granted; and partly because it is difficult to propose a self-contained (not to say fool-proof) definition that will stand challenges from different perspectives. However, defining this term is essential for any grammar to start with, in order for it to be systematic and consistent. In this study, we will propose a definition from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), with reference to the typological features of the language. We will first discuss the

  <title>Tonal assignment of Chinese lettered words</title>

  <description>
    &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
    Lettered word is a unique concept for Chinese language. Broadly speaking, it refers to words that appear in Chinese context but incorporate alphabetical letters in their written form, including Latin alphabet and Greek alphabet. Here are some examples of lettered words:(1)
The emergence of lettered word can be traced back to the early 20th century, at least: The terminological dictionary of natural and social sciences, New Erya (Wang and Ye 1903), includes the word X guangxian (&amp;#x2018;X-ray&amp;#x2019;) as an entry. The prevalence of lettered words has substantially increased over the past few decades due to frequent international communication. The latest edition of the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (published in 2016)
