The end of World War I ushered in a period of renewed strategic interest in the Arctic. If at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the race to the Pole (from Fridtjof Nansen to Robert Edwin Peary) was animated by the sole intentions of glory and patriotic pride,1 the interwar period saw a ‘a return to practicalities’.2 The Arctic theatre thus began to be considered no longer just a ‘realm of primary exploration’, but also a land of potential ‘exploitation and development’.3 It was during the interwar period that ‘the last unclaimed areas of the polar regions were mapped and claimed’4 and during which ‘many of the Arctic’s major sovereignty issues’5 were addressed and resolved. Zygmunt Rusinek was one of the most prominent politicians who played a key role in the Polish government-in-exile during the postwar era. From 1949 to 1954, he served as a member of three successive Polish cabinets in London, which endeavoured to preserve and maintain the continuity and tradition of the pre-war Polish state in opposition to the communist governmental structures being established in Polish territory. Plow agriculture is the dominant economic activity in the highlands of Central and Northern Ethiopia. Various crops are cultivated in distinct agro-climatic zones. In high-altitude areas, cereal crops and legumes are extensively grown, whereas teff, sorghum, and maize are prevalent in the middle and lowland regions. However, much of the lowlands adjacent to Afar are designated as pastoral grazing lands. The land tenure system in the highlands was different from the lowlands. In the former, the rist system, a hereditary landholding arrangement, prevailed, wherein land was considered the property of a descent group. In this excellent and absorbing book, Dawn Hollis cheerfully annihilates a long-standing thesis in the history of mountains. Hollis’s overall argument is deceptively simple: before the modern period, mountains signified a wide variety of things to Europeans and were not universally regarded as places of dread and darkness. This thesis runs counter to an idea so entrenched that it has become, Hollis tells readers, a “ghost theory” — something so old and frequently repeated that it has come to be regarded as fact. Professor William Leo Hansberry was a famous historian and pioneer Africanist who contributed more to the history of Ethiopian and African studies. He focused much of his scholarly work on ancient and medieval Ethiopian history.
