Anyone who has tangled with J. F. von Schulte’s mangled edition of Stephen of Tournai’s Summa on Gratian’s Decretum knows what a disservice it has done to himself and to Stephen.2 In its present guise, when scholars—who should otherwise know better—set Singer’s fine and hefty edition of Rufinus beside Schulte’s meager tome, they have been beguiled into concluding that Stephen was a lesser judicial luminary than his esteemed elder contemporary Rufinus of Bologna.3 Schulte also has not helped estimations of Stephen by proclaiming portions of the Summa are just rehashed Rufinus or other canonists, and so he saw no need to reproduce them in his own edition.4 As canonists often borrowed from one another, sometimes quite

The appropriation of wealthy parishes to monasteries was common in England and elsewhere from the twelfth century. By episcopal or papal licence, the appropriator became rector of the church, with services and pastoral care provided by a perpetual vicar who was a beneficed cleric instituted by the bishop. Traditionally, the issue of relocating the “cathedra” of the archbishopsmetropolitans from Halych to “Leopolis” is examined within the context of the establishment or even a return of Polish rule in Galicia during the late Middle Ages.1 At that time, this region was part of Rus’. Some twenty years ago, when I was completing my book The Interdict in the Thirteenth Century, like many writers of academic monographs, I intended it to be my final word on the subject.1 But naturally where an author’s involvement in a book ends, with publication, a reader’s begins, and readers often expect one to say more about the subject of one’s book. Excommunication as chief spiritual weapon of the medieval Western Church has attracted a considerable body of scholarship. Medieval canon law specialists, notably Richard Helmholz and Elisabeth Vodola, have tended to trace its evolution from the curse-like anathema in Late Antiquity to a legal sanction by around 1200.20 As a sanction imposed by ecclesiastical judges, notably bishops, excommunication was increasingly regulated by procedural law, which restricted its use to a last resort where judicial warnings failed to move Catholics to repent offences against canon law or obey mandates and citations of church courts.
