This question was the focus of a two-day online Climate Symposium hosted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in April 2024. The symposium included keynote presentations, panel discussions, and case studies highlighting innovative projects from across the nation. This volume includes edited versions of four presentations from the Climate Symposium, as well as a plenary speech from the October 2024 PastForward Conference in New Orleans.The contributors to this edition of Forum Journal are national and international leaders in the fields of architecture, research, teaching, and journalism. I'm pleased to be here to make the case for Retrofit.The building you see on the left is the Union Carbide Building. It was built in the 1960s, approximately, and designed by Natalie de Blois of SOM Architects. This is the largest building ever designed by a woman, and it's the largest building ever demolished on purpose.I said it was built in the 1960s, but in fact, the building was renovated to LEED Platinum in 2011, and to go to LEED platinum, you pretty much are gutting everything in the building, except for the structure. Energy was recognized as an economic and national security issue, and buildings were identified as a big part of the problem. Overall fossil fuel-based energy consumption doubled in the United States between 1950 and 1970.
