Midway through her career, after the debut of her second, so-called "Epiphanic" symphony (dismissed by one influential critic as the worst kind of nostalgia, "a fine but tired claw at that old Romantic itch, where the only tension to be found in the ear is pretension"), Antonya Spree fled her disappointments in Seattle for a springtime residency in rural Minnesota. At the time, she was still a young composer, forty-two, forty-three, and several years yet from rededicating herself to a life of teaching. By all accounts she went on to become a supremely talented mentor elsewhere in the country; she summered at several coastal conferences, where she led groups of promising young conductors, and spent her autumns

Woman admitted to Cottage B same night as me, I didn't see for five days. Have you ever owned a German shepherd? The shit, fetch, the walks, the delivery guy. Let's call this girl Jamie. Not like me, though that's my name. I don't remember this girl's name, but she looked like a Jamie. You know how you know someone's favorite food, their accent before they speak, what their mother bugs them about, their German shepherd's name? Slater, Greer, David, me—everyone in Cottage B—played cards and we wondered about Jamie. Trays of food came and went. There are things: people lie, steal, forget to call. I knew a couple in Reno. They could clean the house and dance, then clean the house, then scratch one another's faces, and

Huang tang could never have imagined that after half a lifetime of making porcelain, he would somehow find himself toppling in front of one of his own bowls. He'd dropped everything he was doing and traveled over fifteen miles to the county seat just to see for himself what a porcelain bowl crafted by his ancestors looked like. The Jinzhou County Museum hadn't yet opened when he got there. The entrance was a sea of people. A few dozen police officers stood on either side of the iron gate with joyless expressions on their faces. At 8:30 am, the gate was unlocked, and the visitors formed a line that began crawling sluggishly into the museum. The porcelain bowl occupied its own solitary exhibition hall, where it was

[Google Translated from Chinese Mandarin]Dear Julie—In life, everyone has the same question: Why do people live?, For life? For love? To create value? life has been going on, creating value has been working hard, learning, only love can be encountered but not sought. The lack of storage left in my Google Drive led me to find YC's letter from 2014. The constant barrage of notifications telling me that for only $1.99 per month, I could continue having access to my cloud drive that I had since I was in high school. The drive is my own personal archive where I save letters, documents, articles in case I want to find memories to dig up or bewitch myself with nostalgia. My archives also remind me of the self that I used

In weaving, long threads of warp are wound onto a loom. Single strands of weft weave over and under the warp to create a structural fabric. In my work, I think of warp as the threads of time and lineage and the weft as my learned behaviors. I build fields of dense parallel (warp) threads over colorful drawings on wood panels, omitting the weft. Metaphorically, I remove my behaviors in order to see the ancestral threads that shaped them. The energy that emerges when all of the threads are in place feels like wisdom bestowed by my grandmothers who I never knew, or precolonial matriarchy of my foremothers of the Arctic Circle. While I dismantle narratives in my mind and process somatically while working by hand, I

My wonderful grandpa Celsius was the most normal of men, an old-timer with hair on all of his moles, except for those he had on his ass, he used to claim. He went around all day in his elder-gentleman's dressing gown, the checked flannel one, and always held a cigarette in his left hand as he shouted to himself, because he was half deaf, and he smelled like a urinal. Whenever he saw me, he would point at my head: Stop right there, bird of ill omen! he would say, puffing cigarette smoke into my eyes until they burned. He almost never remembered my name and spent his nights watching international crime reporting on TV, drifting off from time to time. There was a part of me that loved him during this period, although

"I feel like I ask too many questions," Zander said. He'd been falling behind, distracted by the black glacial smears in the granite, by the snow melting into the creek. I was thinking about the ways I get distracted, too, the ways in which I get excited and overwhelm strangers and the ones I love with obscure facts without meaning to, and the subtle ways in which we nurture or squash the interests of those who are closest to us. We were on the fisherman's trail, bushwacking our way around the backside of Crystal Lake when the bear—Zander saw it first—ambled out from the willows onto the trail ahead of us. I stepped in front of Zander and nudged him up to the hill to scramble to the porch of a shuttered cabin with

An e-mail came from Miranda's eldest. "Mom passed peacefully in her sleep last night," he wrote. "I know how much she valued her friendship with you. If you can make it to the funeral, I'm sure she'd be happy to see you there."I did some quick mental math: eighty-six, maybe eighty-seven. Not too shabby, really. So many people would give anything to get that much time. In my case, it would mean another thirty years. Thirty years to write my books, to travel, to collect knickknacks for my home altar, to knit increasingly hideous sweaters that amuse and horrify my niece and nephew: lime green cardigans, vests with three armholes, vests with no armholes. I've never minded being the weird aunt. Somebody has to fill that
