Art in Japan was serious business in the aftermath of World War II and the Allied Occupation. Many of the art world hierarchies and associations formed before the war remained in place, yet there were also portents of change. As early as 1946, the League of Art Organizations issued a manifesto stating that their mission should be to contribute to economic recovery through their painting and print making. On May 25, 1956, a newspaper called Fujin shimpū (New Wave Women) invited its readers to sign up for venereal disease testing.1 Published by the Healthcare Association for Women in Shin-Yoshiwara (Shin-Yoshiwara Joshi Hoken Kumiai), a group of Tokyo brothel workers, the paper targeted women in the same trade in the community. It argued that by participating in these tests, women in Shin-Yoshiwara could showcase their ability to prevent venereal diseases. The paper read,
[Our association's health service policy] reduces the cost of medical treatment for members, makes weekly physical examinations more accessible so that we can lower the infection rate, proves our superior performance in improving hygiene, and

Mukōda Kuniko (1929–1981) was a well-known script writer of domestic dramas for radio and television, and also author of a number of novels and short stories, with three of her stories—Hana no namae (The Name of the Flower), Kawauso (The Otter), and Inugoya (Doghouse)—winning the prestigious Naoki prize in 1980. Chichi no wabijō (Father's Letter of Apology), the collection from which the following translations have been taken, is a testament to Mukōda's further skill as a fine essayist. Her tragic death, in a plane crash in Taiwan in 1981, saw a Mukōda boom in Japan, but curiously, her work has received little attention in academic discussions of women's writing of the Shōwa period (1926–1989) in Japan.Chichi no
