Business organizations have been transforming their operations by understanding the customer purchase journey, tracking changes in customer expectations (Desmet et al., 2015), and leveraging evolving technologies and partners to meet customers’ service demands (Lusch et al., 2015). The customer purchase journey includes multiple phases. Initially, the pre-purchase phase involves learning about products, including service products, and evaluating options against their decision criteria (Simon, 1955). Next, the purchase phase occurs when the purchase decision is executed. Finally, the post-purchase phase encompasses activities related to service and maintenance. This purchase journey reflects the customer’s own value

Different views of population health have surfaced in academia and among health practitioners. Some view it as a goal to achieve measurable improvements in the health of a defined patient population using preventative and care transition practices, recognizing the influence of social and economic factors, along with biological and environmental factors, on patient health outcomes. As such, this is the view of hospitals (or health systems), which are increasingly using the population health concept to develop a better understanding of the social determinants or factors that contribute to health inequities among patient population groups and to develop interventions in support of primary care or care transition

Engaging Caregivers through mHealth to Support Chronic Care Patients

There has been much discussion on caregiver burden as caregivers become instrumental in caring for older patients with long-term care needs and other chronic care conditions (Keenan, 2023), and many health systems are attempting to address the health needs of caregivers while caring for patients after they are discharged from the hospital. As clinical and non-clinical care providers assume increasingly significant roles in patient care post-discharge and preventive care in the future (DeSalvo et al., 2016; Galea & Vaughan, 2021), it becomes crucial to redefine the role of caregivers. They are not merely supporters of patient care but pivotal healthcare workers providing comfort and resources to a growing aging

Since healthcare organizations have begun to shift their focus from care delivery within a hospital to preventive care or care transition post-hospital discharge, especially for those patients viewed as high risk, greater attention has been paid to using remote access technologies (portals, apps, wearables, telehealth, etc.) and how to address the needs of those caring for older and vulnerable populations. About 1 in 6 people in the world are expected to be over the age of 65 by 2050, up from 1 in 11 in 2019 (United Nations, 2019). An estimated 1 in 3 older adults live with more than a single chronic condition (i.e., heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia) (Fortin et al., 2010; Kuo et al., 2013), with this

Leadership in Developing a Wellness Strategy Using Digital Services and an Integrated Digital Platform

In a well-functioning healthcare system, the creation of value for patients or citizens (referred to here as clients) should determine the rewards for all other actors in the system (Porter, 1985). The integration of multiple actors, clinical and non-clinical, and their resources helps fulfill one or more value propositions that cumulatively support value creation (Vargo et al., 2017). Feedback from clients during value-in-use is used to assess value gaps and begin the next value cycle. Such a human-centered design to create, fulfill, and assess value, using multiple value cycles, calls for healthcare leaders to transform their organizations to support population health (Tremblay et al., 2017). In this context
