    Let us begin with a scene that took place in Cebu (situated in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines) sometime between 1569 and 1572. Mart&amp;#xED;n de Rada, a recently arrived Spanish Augustinian, found his path crossing with Canco, a Chinese merchant. Their encounter, a serendipitous weave of fate and curiosity, marked the confluence of two worlds, the East and the West. At first, one might think that the lack of one common language prohibited their ability to understand each other. Yet, their  interaction became a conduit for cross-continental and cross-imperial connection.     In the letter Alboroto y mot&amp;#xED;n de M&amp;#xE9;xico del 8 de Junio de 1692 (translated as Riot in Mexico City, June 8, 1692), Creole polymath Carlos de Sig&amp;#xFC;enza y G&amp;#xF3;ngora wrote to his friend in Madrid, Admiral Andr&amp;#xE9;s Pez (1653&amp;#x2013;1710), to communicate the events leading to the incidents that took place on that day.2 On the fateful day, Mexico City witnessed the burning of government buildings and looting of shops on the Plaza Mayor by Indians, castes, and marginal Spaniards.     Four novels have been written about the Montonero leader Mercedes Carazo, three of which are constructed as framed narratives: El fin de la historia (1996) by Liliana Heker, Noche de lobos (2011) by Abel Posse, and Doble fondo (2017) by Elsa Osorio. The fourth novel, Recuerdo de la muerte (1984) by Miguel Bonasso, is not a framed narration, and therefore is not pertinent to this study. With the exception of  El fin de la historia, not much has been written about these novels. However, it is striking that the literary criticism that does exist on the other two novels approaches them solely from the perspective of historical truth value.     Much of the Jewish-themed fiction from 20th-and 21st-century Spain meditates on the significance and possibility of a Jewish presence in a country notorious for the 1492 expulsion of its Jewish communities. In these works, a Jewish &amp;#x201C;return&amp;#x201D; to Spain or a Spanish-Jewish &amp;#x201C;reencounter&amp;#x201D; often entails contact between the descendants&amp;#x2014;whether real or imagined&amp;#x2014; of the expelled Jews and their Christian oppressors.
