    Miguel de Silveira&amp;#39;s El Macabeo, published in Naples in 1638, sings of Judas Maccabee&amp;#39;s restoration of the Temple of Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt of 167&amp;#x2013;70 BCE.1 The primary sources for the subject matter are the two deuterocanonical books of Maccabees, which feature in the Catholic and Orthodox Bibles but are considered apocryphal in Protestantism and rabbinic Judaism. Silveira (Celorico da Beira, c. 1580 &amp;#x2013; Naples?, after 1639), like most of the seventeenth-century authors of Old Testament Spanish epics&amp;#x2014;one branch of the prolific genre of Spanish sacred epic&amp;#x2014;was of Sephardic Jewish ancestry.     In Border Killers, Elizabeth Villalobos notes that violence in Mexico&amp;#39;s northern and southern borders has generally been sensationalized and misrepresented by depictions of a hyperviolent masculine Mexican border culture in news media and political discourse. Villalobos&amp;#39;s book stands out from a growing body of border narrative criticism in that it refracts from these representations by offering an interdisciplinary close reading of what she calls &amp;#x22;interstitial narratives,&amp;#x22; creative works that decenter gory violence and counter stereotypical depictions of border killers by &amp;#x22;placing violence off-stage or off-page&amp;#x22; (10).
