    Reverend George William Clarke (1849&amp;#x2013;1919), a China Inland Mission missionary, is commemorated by his organization as an &amp;#x22;unswerving servant&amp;#x22; (OMF-International 2020). He devoted his forty-four years in China (1875&amp;#x2013;1919) to evangelization in places where the Gospel had not reached, mainly Henan Province, Guiyang (Guizhou Province), and Dali (Yunnan Province).     Lexicographic research into the etymology and etiology of words and phrases frequently focuses on finding, recording, and publishing examples that consist of brief snippets of a sentence or two at most. While this practice is an essential backbone to historical lexicography, it is often insufficient to fully understand the origin and sociolinguistic development of the lexeme in question and can even mislead the lexicographer drafting the definitions (Hawke 2015, 179&amp;#x2013;80). The snippets tend to divorce the term from its full context, not only the textual context in which it appears but also the context of the discourse: who said it, the intended audience, and its wider social framework.     A period of worldwide interest in learning English as a foreign language preceded the emergence of learner&amp;#39;s lexicography as a genre. Beginning in the 1920s, primarily for pedagogical purposes, experts started compiling word lists, the so-called &amp;#x22;controlled vocabularies&amp;#x22; to facilitate teaching of the English language.In 1927, the Tokyo Research Institute for English Language Teaching, headed by Harold Palmer, began work on English vocabulary (Cowie 1999, 15). The aim was to identify words that played an important role in everyday language use.
