Since the 1990s, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) Programme has supported the collection, publication, and distribution of household survey data on the health and well-being of women and children through partnerships between UNICEF and participating countries (see https://mics.unicef.org). In this book, the fruit of a socio-historical study conducted between 2014 and 2024 using a rich and diverse body of sources, Cécile Thomé interrogates the widespread idea that medicalized contraception offered ‘sexual liberation’. Instead, she examines the concrete ways in which the use of contraceptive techniques (medical or otherwise) has acted on pre-existing norms and relations. A question guides her analysis: if the fear of pregnancy shapes sexuality, does ceasing to have that fear not shape heterosexual relations just as strongly? Afghanistan has had a tumultuous recent history. As a result of decades of war, limited research on demographic behaviours has been conducted. That said, anecdotal evidence points towards a strong son preference in Afghanistan. To give only a few examples, Sharidzada and Sadid (2006) report that baby exchanges occur in hospitals, with a mother delivering a daughter and leaving the hospital with a son. While a son is often referred to as a bacha, or ‘child’, a daughter is often referred to as a dokhtar, suggesting otherness (Nordberg, 2014). Marion Maudet’s book, based on her PhD thesis in sociology, explores the interactions between sexuality and religion in a predominantly heterosexual population. Through the analysis of a series of quantitative surveys as well as 25 interviews with Catholics and Muslims, she sheds light on believers’ sexual trajectories and ordinary experiences of sexuality. Maudet shows that far from representing two contradictory spheres, sexuality and religion are not simply juxtaposed, but in constant interrelation. This volume is the French translation of the second edition of Seth Holmes’s Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies: Migrant Farmworkers in the United States (2023). First published in 2013, the book explores the condition of migrants from Oaxaca who come to work in fruit production on the west coast of the United States. Around half of married individuals will one day be faced with the death of their spouse; and this event is likely to affect most aspects of their existence, including standard of living (Bonnet et al., 2020), housing conditions (Bonnet et al., 2007), sociability (Delbès and Gaymu, 2002), and even state of health (Sermet and Grandjean, 1998; Thierry, 1999).
