Poetry offers perhaps the most cathartic vehicle for personal expression in times of crisis, as reflected in the long tradition of writing odes and elegies to mark the death of significant figures in a poet's life. Three weeks ago, I was in Chisnau, Moldavia, a former Soviet Republic stuck between Romania and Ukraine for a literary festival, just the weekend of the legislative elections. The pro-European camp won in spite of an intense Russian propaganda. Working as the Crawshaw Professor of Literature at Colgate University, New York, in the spring of 1972, Anne Sexton acknowledged, "I am told that my poetry is the work of a victim, of the passive sufferer, of the crucified man.
