The Witold Gombrowicz Archive found a home at Yale University in 1996, when the Beinecke Library acquired it from his widow, Rita. It comprises papers and books Gombrowicz had in his possession at the time of his death in July 1969 as well as important documentation she subsequently assembled. A survey of its theater-related holdings not only offers a rare glimpse of theater history but also indicates possible areas for research and production in the future.

Gombrowicz did not save his manuscripts, and few of his works survive in this form. The archive thus contains

"I was born and raised in a most respectable home": This ironic sentence, which begins one of my short stories—"The Memoirs of Stefan Czarniecki"—may also serve as an opening for these present recollections. I was indeed a milksop from a so-called respectable family; but here the word respectable should be used without irony, since it was a home of people who generally speaking were kind-hearted and had their principles.

My father owned a small property in Sandomierz province and also worked in industry; when I was growing up he was president of Central

Whenever I think of Gombrowicz or read his works I remember an anecdote from his life in Argentina. A child asked about the writer during a long absence from his friends' house: "What happened to that man who makes such funny faces?" From his first publication of Recollections of Adolescence in Warsaw in 1933—a volume of short stories containing "A Feast at Countess Kotlubay's"—Gombrowicz made faces at various social conventions and initiated literary games to provoke a reevaluation of cultural patterns. Although that first volume brought a considerable number of reviews, several in major literary

The totality of Witold Gombrowicz's life and theatrical work can be grasped only through multiple perspectives—one must see the road ahead and look in the rearview mirror at the same time. This has always been true but is especially apparent in the midst of the Gombrowicz centennial year in 2004. Gombrowicz was a playwright and the consummate writer's writer. He lived in Poland for the first half of his life and as an émigré for the rest. His plays consistently waited decades for their first professional productions, yet his theatrical talent was always ultimately vindicated in performance. He wrote his four plays in

The fifteenth Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theater (CIFET) took over virtually every theater in Cairo from September 1 to 11, 2003. CIFET attracts seventy-three participants from forty-three countries, including sixteen Arab countries. Though largely unknown in the United States, the festival draws a more diverse group of participants than many of the better-recognized European festivals. For example, this year's schedule included work not only from most of the Arab nations (including multiple entries from Qatar, Tunisia, and Libya, to name a few), but also from nations as divergent as South Korea, Rwanda, Cameroon, and Uzbekistan. That such a festival should exist in Egypt might seem unexpected.
