In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Note on Transliteration and Dates xv Throughout the text unfamiliar titles of Russian books, journals, organizations , and so forth have been given in English translation, with the original Russian in the notes. Titles of all Russian and most foreign plays are given in English translation, with the Russian titles of the plays in the Appendix of Titles. In the Bibliography and Notes I have adhered to the Library of Congress system of transliteration. In the text, for reasons of custom and convenience, I have rendered names familiar to English-speaking readers in their anglicized forms (e.g., Leo Tolstoy, not Lev Tolstoi; Alexander Ostrovsky, not Aleksandr Ostrovskii), and have dropped hard and soft signs in names (e.g., Kugel, not Kugel’; Kleigels, not Kleigel’s). Dates before February 1918 follow the Julian (old style) calendar in use in Russia at the time. In the nineteenth century it was twelve days behind the Gregorian (new style) calendar used in Western Europe and the United States, and thirteen days behind in the twentieth century.
